Elementary Principal News

by Lindsay Leonard

Fall is here and is in full swing!  Students have already worked hard for over half of the first quarter!    I have had the pleasure of observing during classes and love the enthusiasm our teachers have for the material as well as their dedication to make the information interesting and relevant for the students.

Assessments this year again include a reading screening for all students in grades kindergarten to third grade (per state requirements).  Screenings were also administered for students who show concerns in reading or are performing significantly below grade level.  This is a requirement by DESE that was passed a couple years ago and we again are openly embracing and look forward to improving instruction for our students.  Your child’s teacher has already reached out to you with a description of information to share if there is a concern or if a student is not quite performing where they need to be within a specific skill set.  Please remember that these screeners do not in any way “diagnose” a student with a disability.  These screeners only provide us with risk factors that may indicate a gap in student learning and help the teachers create targeted instruction to meet the needs of our learners

Keep collecting those Box Tops!  Box tops have moved to an electronic form.  The new way to collect box tops is by downloading the app, selecting Pilot Grove Elementary and then scanning your receipt.  You will just need to plug in the school information and the Box Tops credit will be recorded that way.  Please call the office with any questions.

Halloween is just around the corner!  For the past several years we have always looked forward to our Annual Trunk or Treat.  This year to be extra cautious, we will be have an alternative Halloween celebration.  Students are welcome to wear or bring their costumes to school on October 30th (no gore or weapons).  We look forward to next year when we can pick back up the Trunk or Treat but will make the best of the current situation and make it a great celebration for the kids.

A reminder, school pictures will be on Friday, October 2nd.

Finally, be sure to tune in to KOMU for the morning Pledge!  Pilot Grove Elementary students will be reciting the Pledge of Allegiance starting October 3rd.  We will air in the last 15 minutes of KOMU 8 News Today (M-F 6-7 a.m., Saturdays 6-7 a.m. and 9-10a.m., Sundays 7-8 a.m.).  The schedule of air dates is as followed:

  • October 3- Kindergarten
  • October 4- First Grade
  • October 5- Second Grade
  • October 6- Third Grade
  • October 7- Fourth Grade
  • October 8- Fifth Grade
  • October 9- Sixth Grade

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me by email al lleonard@pilotgrove.k12mo.us or at the elementary office 660-834-4115.
