Many exciting things have been happening with the Pilot Grove Seniors this year! The Senior year can be exciting and extremely frightening. The realization that “adult” life is just around the corner can add a great deal of stress on these young adults. This semester we are focusing on exposure to different colleges, trade schools, military and work options. Pilot Grove rootEd partnered with Glasgow rootEd to host their first College & Career Day on October 19th. We were able to set up tables for over 35 presenters to share about their college, work environment, military branch or apprenticeship training programs. We were thrilled that we were able to offer an event that could benefit ALL students, regardless of their path following graduation.
We are currently working on creating student FSA ID’s and assisting parents in creating their ID’s, so that when the FAFSA opens in December, families are ready to complete their application.
Seniors are going on college/career visits and I strongly encourage this for them trying to find the “right” fit for them next year. We also spent an afternoon writing a resume so that applying for scholarships and/or jobs would be easier.
Scholarship work is just beginning and several Seniors are taking advantage of applying for early scholarship opportunities. Applying for scholarships will become a top priority for me next semester as I support them in this work.
I am beginning my work with the Junior class and have enjoyed taking them to Build My Future and the College & Career Day. I look forward to working with them more next semester. Congratulations to Carlie Thomas who has been invited to participate in the STARS Fly-In program in May. She will be flown to Chicago to tour and experience about the University of Chicago and the opportunities they offer students. This program is dedicated to working with high schools and access organization to widen pathways to higher education.
