Career and Family Living

This course is an instructional program that prepares individuals to establish a positive self-concept; to practice positive interpersonal skills; to analyze the work of the family; to explore work, jobs, and careers; to explore community roles and responsibilities; and to integrate multiple roles and responsibilities of individuals, families, careers, and community. Students will become familiar with and carry out individual FCCLA National Programs. (1/2 Unit)


Family, Home Furnishing, And Equipment

Prerequisite: None

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

This course is an instructional program that prepares individuals to construct meaning and acquire skills related to housing environment and design; analyze influences and factors impacting the selection and creation of safe and healthy living environments; analyze careers related to housing environment and design; and utilize leadership, problem-solving and communication skills to assume roles as responsible family members and citizens. (1/2 Unit)


Family/Individual Health (Required)

Prerequisite: None

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Freshmen are encouraged to take this course. Offers a view on wellness and methods to help attain good health for the individual and the family. Discussion topics include mental health, nutrition, drugs (including alcohol and tobacco), body systems, first aid, disease prevention (including AIDS and sexually transmitted disease), and family health. This class will meet the health credit that is required for graduation. (1/2 Unit)


Nutrition And Wellness

Prerequisite: None

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

The emphasis of the course is on nutrition in relation to the six essential nutrients and the Food Guide Pyramid. Instruction includes information on planning balanced meals, food products and preparation techniques. Class work includes planning and preparation of meals. (1/2 Unit)

FAMILY LIVING AND PARENTHOOD

Prerequisite: None

Grade: 10, 11, 12

Emphasis is on family life, children’s needs, growth, and education. Studies include units on family types, pregnancy and prenatal development, and preparation for family life. Students are encouraged to form opinions about decisions they will face in the future in respect to the family life. (1/2 Unit)

Child Development: Care And Guidance (Intermediate)

Prerequisite: None

Grade: 10, 11, 12

Students learn about the physical, social, emotional, and mental development of a child from birth to age 8. Students are actively involved in planning age appropriate activities and working with children. Careers in child care are also studied. (1/2 Unit)

Parenting Education

Prerequisite: None

Grade: Consent of Instructor

Study centers on myths and realities of parenthood; readiness to parent; developmental changes in families; child abuse/neglect; human reproduction/family planning aids; STD’S; pregnancy/birth; care of the young child; guidance/discipline/safety; toy selection; building relationships with others; developing communication skills and decision making; building self esteem. (1/2 Unit)

Personal Finance (Required)

Prerequisite: None

Grade: 10, 11, 12

This course is an instructional program that prepares individuals to understand resource management issues that may be faced now and in the future. Course includes: Sources of personal income, saving and consumer spending patterns; development of techniques for planning and budgeting consumption expenditures and saving, with special emphasis on the use of saving allocations to achieve personal goals; credit, financial investment, insurance.
