English Department

English I (Required)

Grade:  9, 10, 11, 12

This course is designed to improve grammar and composition skills, to increase vocabulary, and to achieve an appreciation of literature. (1 Unit)

 

English II (Required)

Prerequisite:  English I

Grade:  10, 11, 12

An advanced study of grammar, composition, and vocabulary.  There is an emphasis on the study of literature, including the analysis of poetry, short stories, plays and novels.  (1 Unit)

 

English III (Required)

Prerequisite:  English I and II

Grade:  11, 12

Designed for the junior or senior student who is college- bound.  This course focuses on American literature as well as various forms of writing.  (1 Unit)

 

English IIID (Required)

Prerequisite:  English I and II

Grade:  11, 12

This course is an activity-orientated and focuses on communication, language arts, and other English skills.  (1 Unit)

 

College Prep English (Option for 4th English credit) (Weighted)

Prerequisite:  English I, II, and III

Grade:  12

Designed for college-bound seniors, covers the complete range of modern writing throughout the world.  Various genres and authors are studied.  (1 Unit)


Communications (Required)

Prerequisite:  None

Grade:  9, 10, 11, 12

Students are introduced to the basic communication skills and practice such skills as expository, persuasive, process, and cause and effect forms of communication.  (1/2 Unit)

 

Creative Writing (Option for 4th English credit)

Prerequisite:  English I and II

Students are introduced to many forms of writing creatively, including, but not limited to, poetry, short stories and children’s stories.  Students are also required to read their writing to the class and other classes when appropriate. (1/2 Unit)

 

Novels (Option for 4th English credit)

Prerequisite:  English I and II

Students are introduced to the modern novel genre and are required to read novels written by contemporary authors.  Students are also required to provide written assignments throughout the process of reading the novels.  (1/2 Unit)

 

Practical English (Elective)

Prerequisite:  Grade of C in Business Tech I and English I

Grade:  10, 11, 12

A working, project orientated class in which the school yearbook is published.  Students learn desktop skills using the computer of basic typing and design.  Students using speaking and interviewing skills to get quotes for the book and sell advertisements.  Basic photography skills are learned with attention to composition, lighting, and contrast.  English skills used are:  letter writing, record keeping of book sales and advertisements, and basic grammar and mechanics.  Students also learn to use Adobe Photoshop, Windows Movie Maker and design layouts.  Students are expected to cover in-school activities as well as out-of-school activities.  (1 Unit)
